Bluetooth lock integration

The challenge

The lock of a business ran on a very basic Bluetooth module: to add or remove a user you had to reset the whole configuration and register every remote and phone again from scratch. And the company responsible had stopped providing support, so the system was left with no maintenance and no way of updating it.

The constraints

Replacing the whole lock was the expensive way out. The condition was to carry on using the original electronics already installed and working, adding capabilities on top instead of replacing them.

The solution

The original system is kept and a WiFi module compatible with Tuya Smart is added in parallel, bringing remote management of permissions, adding and removing users from the app, opening without being present, and its own set of RF remotes that can be reconfigured at any time. The electronics from one of the original Bluetooth remotes are fitted inside a custom-printed enclosure that also houses the WiFi module with its relays and the RF receiver.

Assembly details

The enclosure has external buttons that act directly on the pairing buttons of the WiFi module and on those of the original remote, so that a device can be configured or paired without dismantling anything. It also carries a small transparent channel that makes the internal LEDs visible from outside, useful for checking states and pairings at a glance.

The relay module carries a 3.3 V regulator that powers the Bluetooth remote without trouble, given its low consumption. The open and close contacts of the remote are wired directly to the relays, so that each activation reproduces the original button press.

The assembly is powered by a small transformer and is installed inside the premises, working in parallel with the original system.
