Hinge for Shure SRH440

A replacement with a more precise fit than the design it started from, restoring the movement of the hinge.

The challenge

The part joining the headband to the earcup on a pair of Shure SRH440 acts as a hinge and forms part of the system that slides to adjust the length. It is a point that tends to break over the years, and when it does it puts out of use a pair of headphones that otherwise still work.

The constraints

It has a double function —turning and sliding— so the fit had to be precise in both movements. And it is a visible part: the finish counted as much as the fit.

The solution

It started from a design published on Thingiverse and was modified to improve the fit and bring it closer to the look and the operation of the original part. Then progressive sanding to a fine surface and matt black paint to match the factory finish.
